About Dr. Paliwal

Dr. Mohan Paliwal is an interventional cardiologist and medical academic based in Mumbai. He holds a DM in Cardiology from Grant Government Medical College & Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, where he now serves as Assistant Professor of Cardiology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

His clinical work spans the full breadth of interventional cardiology — from diagnostic angiography and echocardiography to complex, high-risk coronary intervention (CHIP), chronic total occlusions, left main and bifurcation disease with intravascular imaging guidance, structural and congenital interventions, and cardiac device implantation. He trained and practises in a high-volume public teaching hospital, where the case mix is unusually broad and frequently complex.

Alongside clinical practice, he maintains an active academic record: peer-reviewed case reports and articles in international and national cardiology journals, regular complex-case presentations at India's principal interventional meetings, and recurring invitations as national faculty, chairperson and discussant. He teaches residents and fellows as part of his academic appointment and is committed to evidence-based, guideline-directed cardiac care.

Common cardiac conditions

Coronary Artery Disease

Narrowing of the heart arteries due to plaque, which can cause chest pain (angina) or a heart attack. Managed with medication, angioplasty or bypass surgery.

Hypertension

Persistently high blood pressure that silently damages the heart, kidneys and brain. Controlled with lifestyle change and targeted medication.

Heart Failure

Weakness of the heart muscle causing breathlessness, fatigue and swelling. Modern guideline-directed therapy dramatically improves outcomes.

Arrhythmias

Abnormal heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation. Managed with medication, cardioversion, ablation or device therapy.

Valvular Heart Disease

Narrowed or leaking heart valves (aortic, mitral, tricuspid). Treated with medication, balloon valvotomy or valve replacement.

Congenital Heart Disease

Structural defects present from birth such as ASD, VSD and PDA — many now closed with minimally invasive devices.

Frequently asked questions

When should I see a cardiologist?

See a cardiologist if you have chest pain, unexplained breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness or fainting, a strong family history of heart disease, or if your physician has flagged high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol. A baseline evaluation after age 40 is also wise.

What are the warning signs of a heart attack?

Central chest discomfort or heaviness lasting more than a few minutes, pain radiating to the jaw, back or left arm, sudden sweating, shortness of breath, nausea, or a sense of impending doom. If you suspect a heart attack, call 108 immediately — do not drive yourself.

What is the difference between angiography and angioplasty?

Angiography is a diagnostic test that uses contrast dye and X-ray to visualise blockages in the heart arteries. Angioplasty (PCI) is the treatment — a balloon and stent are used to open the blocked artery. Both are usually performed through the wrist (radial) or groin (femoral).

Is angioplasty painful? How long is recovery?

Angioplasty is performed under local anaesthesia — you stay awake and feel only mild pressure. Most patients are discharged within 24–48 hours and return to routine activities within a week, with full recovery over 4–6 weeks.

How can I keep my heart healthy?

Aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week, eat a Mediterranean-style diet rich in vegetables, whole grains and lean protein, avoid tobacco, limit alcohol, sleep 7–8 hours, manage stress, and get annual checks of blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol — especially with a family history of heart disease.

How often should I follow up after a cardiac procedure?

After angioplasty or device implantation, follow-ups are typically at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and annually thereafter. Adherence to prescribed medication — especially antiplatelets and statins — is critical.
